No to water charges

Despite its stated position that it will not introduce water charges, we are sceptical of the Dublin Government's intentions, given its record on promises to date.

Worryingly, the new Water Services Bill contains measures specifically related to meters.

Water charges are a regressive stealth tax. Everyone has the right to an adequate supply of safe, clean water as a basic entitlement. Ability to access safe clean water cannot be based on a person's ability to pay for it.

There is a disastrous record of privatisation of water services in other states.

The provision of water services is a key responsibility of the state and such services must not be privatised.
