Joey Connolly

The death of Joey Connolly from Garvaghblane, Aghyaran, County Tyrone, has greatly saddened republicans throughout Ireland. Joey died in the early hours of Wednesday morning 21 April following a short illness. His death was expected, given the nature of his terminal illness, but his sudden passing left his friends shocked.

Joey Connolly was known to many throughout Ireland as the dignified father of Volunteer Josie Connolly, killed on active service with Óglaigh na hÉireann in February 1989, and of Charlie Connolly, who died in a tragic accident in San Francisco in November 1990.

Joey and his wife Anna had three younger children, Kevin, Barry and Áine. Joey himself was a lifelong republican who had emigrated to Scotland in search of employment. After his return home to Castlederg and Aghyaran, he and his family became used to harassment from the RUC, the UDR and the British Army.

When local people heard of Joey's illness, many made their way to his home to speak with him and express love and solidarity to his family. One of the final personal objectives Joey set for himself was to attend his sons' graves on Easter Sunday morning in Aghyaran Graveyard. He lived to fulfill that goal and was accorded the honour of laying a wreath on their graves on behalf of the Republican Movement.

At Joey's funeral on Friday 23 April, Fr Willie Sproule celebrated Mass. The Tricolour was placed on his coffin by republican comrades and was then handed to Anna. After he had been laid to rest in the cemetery beside St Patrick's Church in Aghyaran, family friend and West Tyrone MLA Barry McElduff described him as a "staunch man, a great family man who had a very strong religious faith and who was very proud to call himself an Irish republican". In his graveside tribute, McElduff said that Joey was a strong-minded person who was philosophical about a united Ireland.

He concluded: "Joey was a great friend to very many people. He was surrounded by the love and friendship of so many, especially Anna and their family."

Joey will be sorely missed by all his comrades in the local Harvey/Connolly/Shanahan Sinn Féin cumann, who extend their deepest sympathy to Anna and the Connolly family. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam uasal. Ní dheanfar dearmar air.
