Believing that the British Government has no right in Ireland, never had any right in Ireland, and never can have any right in Ireland, the presence, in any one generation of Irish men, of even a respectable minority ready to die, to affirm that truth, makes that government forever a usurpation and a crime against human progress." — James Connolly, Easter 1916. OBITUARY

Bernard 'Bo' Glennon

Belfast republican Bernard 'Bo' Glennon, who died suddenly last month in his Ardoyne home, was originally from the Falls Road area.

He moved to the Wheatfield area of the Crumlin Road in the late 1960s, just as the conflict that was to convulse the North erupted. Bo's wife, who was a Protestant, died a number of years ago.

The conflict soon came to Bo's door, when loyalists carried out a gun attack on his home. Luckily, he and his family escaped with their lives. However, Bo felt it wiser to move with his family from the Wheatfield into Ardoyne itself.

The Glennon family home in Brompton Park soon became a focal point for local republicans and the door was open morning, noon and night.

The hospitality of the Glennon family was extended to everyone and anyone who was involved in the struggle against British rule in Ireland.

Bo himself assisted in every way possible in the struggle for liberation. He also helped beleaguered families from across Belfast who had been intimidated out of their homes by loyalist gangs.

He was a keen footballer in his younger days and in later years he took great delight in encouraging younger people to participate in sport. He saw this as alleviating the turmoils of the conflict

His great love was the Easter Parade and he wore his Easter Lily with pride.

Since Christmas, the Ardoyne area has been devastated by a series of suicides, mostly of young men, and the impact these deaths had on the area was sorely felt by Bo. He attended meetings and took part in anything he could to try and alleviate the suffering of his community.

Bo died suddenly last month. He will be sorely missed by his family, who he loved dearly.

The republican family salutes Bo for all his endeavours and assistance throughout the years. He will never be forgotten.
