Coiste na nIarchimí to host summer school

Slievegullion Courtyard, nestling at the foot of Slievegullion in South Armagh, is the setting for this year's summer school organised by Coiste na nIarchimí, the umbrella organisation for republican ex-prisoner groups throughout Ireland.

Based around the theme of Leadership in a Time of Change, the event will take place from 17-20 June. Conor Murphy, MLA for Newry and south Armagh, said he was delighted that the Coiste had once again chosen the locality.

"Slievegullion Courtyard is an excellent location to host the Coiste summer school given its location, its facilities and the beautiful woodland within which it is situated," he said.

"Last year's event, which also took place in south Armagh, was a great success. Anyone who attended found the debates stimulating and was very impressed by the prestigious line-up of speakers that the organisers had managed to attract to the event. I've no doubt that this year's summer school will be likewise. It's a definite date for republicans to mark in their diaries."

Annual event

Laurence McKeown, research co- with Coiste and one of the organisers of the summer school said: "This is the second summer school that we have organised and we hope it will become an annual event. The format offers an opportunity to bring together people from a diverse range of political, cultural and social backgrounds and in a relaxed environment discuss our range of visions for creating a new society based on equality and justice. We are in the process of finalising the programme at the moment but believe we will have an exciting programme to offer. Full details of it will be published in An Phoblacht once it is available."
