Hunger Strike events in United States

Seán Crowe meets with City of Portland Commissioner Randy Leonard

SINN FÉIN TD Seán Crowe was the speaker at three events in the USA to mark the 30th Anniversary of the Hunger Strikes of 1980 and 1981, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 15th, 16th and 17th September.
The Dublin South-West TD was head of ‘Youth Against H-Block’ in 1981.
Starting in Portland, Oregon, Seán travelled to Seattle in Washington State and then to San Francisco in California. The Hunger Strike Exhibition, 18 panels of photographs and articles which trace the history of Hunger Strike as a political protest, was on show at Portland City Hall for the week before the Hunger Strike event, which was also held there.
The Oregon World Affairs Council also supported the event. Seán met with Mayor Sam Adams and City Commissioner Randy Leonard.
In Seattle, Seán spoke at a meeting of activists to talk about the causes and consequences of the Hunger Strikes and briefed them on current events in Ireland.
In San Francisco, the Hunger Strike event was held at the United Irish Cultural Centre where the Hunger Strike Exhibition was on display and attracted a huge amount of interest.
The Hunger Strike anniversary was marked at the Seapoint Center in Boston on September 25th and will be at the Irish Heritage Centre in Chicago on October 2nd, where the exhibition will again be on display.
