AG calls for Finucane inquiry

The 26-County attorney general, Rory Brady, has told a lawyers' conference in the United States that it would be "inconceivable" if the British government did not institute a public judicial inquiry into the assassination of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane.

Speaking to the Washington DC Bar Association, Brady paid tribute to Pat Finucane's work in representing both republican and loyalist prisoners before raising the issue of collusion between the British forces and loyalists. "There is a well-based suspicion of involvement of agents of the state in this murder," he said.

"It seems to me that it would be inconceivable that a democratic government would not - in the circumstances of Pat Finucane's murder - move to institute a public judicial inquiry."
