CLAIMS of losing inward investment and undermining Ireland's position in Europe were rubbished on Tuesday by Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin who pointed out that 2008 actually saw a 14% increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) on the previous year. The growing toll of jobs losses is due to Fianna Fáil/PD/Green ministers' incompetence, not Lisbon, he said.

ECONOMIC CRISIS: Nine reasons to say 'No to NAMA'

THE Fianna Fáil/Green Government has been challenged by Sinn Féin to hold a people's referendum on NAMA (the National Asset Management Agency, the state's 'bad bank' set up to buy toxic loans) on the same day as the Lisbon Treaty re-run. Describing NAMA as "the crime of the century", Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD also outlined the party's 'Nine Reasons to Say No to Nama'.

Protests against education cuts across 26 Counties

SINN FÉIN has staged street protests throughout the 26 Counties against education spending cuts and has pledged not to stand by as the primary education sector is systematically dismantled by the Fianna Fáil/PD/Green Party Government. Activists hand out leaflets and postcards for people to send to the Minister for Education Batt O'Keeffe.

'Yes' to Lisbon will see farming suffer same fate as fishing

FARMERS have been urged by Sinn Féin's Martin Ferris to vote No to the Lisbon Treaty again next month because it is the same treaty they said No to before and it is still a bad deal for Ireland. Nothing has changed, he said. "It was a bad deal for rural Ireland in 2008 and it remains a bad deal in 2009," Sinn Féin's Agriculture spokesperson reiterated. Martin Ferris was speaking after Irish Farmers' Association leader Pádraig Walshe called for a 'Yes' vote in the re-run Lisbon Treaty referendum.

Tax Commission report to be published on Monday

TWO key reports hit Cabinet ministers' desks in Dublin this week. One was the 600-page Commission on the Taxation Report, which comes with 250 proposals including new taxes on property and services such as water, as well as so-called 'carbon taxes' on energy and fuel emissions. The second report is the latest Exchequer tax returns (released on Monday) which show that the Government's tax revenue predictions are now off target by up to €1 billion. As the economic downturn continues, it is VAT and income tax returns that are holding up Government funding.

Derry's and Antrim's 'colossal contribution' to freedom struggle highlighted

HUNDREDS of republicans gathered in Gulladuff, County Derry, last Sunday to hear Sinn Féin National Chairperson Declan Kearney deliver a moving tribute at the Annual Counties Derry & Antrim Republican Commemoration at the Garden of Remembrance at Gulladuff. As always, the annual commemoration proved to be an occasion for the renewal of friendships between the many people from Counties Derry and Antrim who down through years have made a major contribution to the struggle for Irish freedom, independence and social justice, not just at a local level but at a national level also.

Justice for victims of Israeli state slaughter

As part of West Belfast's Féile an Phobail the Irish Palestine Solidarity Committee organised a series of lectures on 6 August detailing Israel's massive breaches of international humanitarian law during the December-January onslaught against the Gaza Strip. The audience heard presentations by Amnesty International's Patrick Corrigan and representatives from Physicians for Human Rights and the Ramallah-based human rights organisation Al-Haq.
